Boys at the DBCS regularly have the opportunity to experience and learn from the unique environment where the Drakensberg Boys Choir School is situated. It is in this different environment – the classroom of nature, away from the classroom between four walls – that the boys find themselves confronted with new and demanding challenges. Here, in the fresh mountain air amongst the sheer beauty of nature, the boys learn to understand themselves better, and the staff has the opportunity to get to know the young men’s characters out of the classroom environment. As a result of these shared experiences in a relaxed and less formal environment, the boys see their teachers also in a different light, often with newfound respect, the same being true for the boys.

The Outward Bound experiences inspire the boys to drive themselves to achieve more then they ever thought possible, and to show compassion for others. These outdoor challenges show the boys the meaning of two very simple words: “I can.” Back in the classroom they show more confidence, become more focused, able to work together and meet new challenges eagerly.

These circumstances contribute and enable the Drakensberg Boys Choir to be one of the best Boy Choirs in the world today.
